From two to six weeks after the initial contact, the person will develop a rash. The scratching does not relieve the itching, but can cause bleeding and open sores, which may then be infected by bacteria. Females lay their eggs at the closed end of the furrows. Norwegian scabies or crusted scabies is characterized by thick crusts that form on the skin. They appear in patches on the palms, soles, buttocks, and ears. The infection can even spread to the edges of nails that were soon covered with thick crusts. In this type of infestation, the number of mites is particularly high, but the itching is not as intense as in other outbreaks. |
